Production house MD Entertainment has reportedly given out cash bonuses to those involved in the making of the successful film Ayat-Ayat Cinta (Verses of Love), which was directed by Hanung Bramantyo.

The film officially recorded 3,650,000 ticket sales, producer Manoj Punjabi said during a thanksgiving event Monday night.

He said the production house was still considering plans to produce the sequel to the movie.

Ayat-Ayat Cinta, featuring Freddy Nuril, Rianty Cartwright, Carissa Putri and Melani Putria, recorded the highest ticket sales for a local film since 2000.

In the past seven years, only three local flicks have reached ticket sales of more than two million. The films were Ada Apa Dengan Cinta? (What's Up with Cinta?) with 2.5 million recorded ticket sales, Get Married with 2.2 million and Naga Bonar Jadi 2 (Naga Bonar Becomes 2) with 2.4 million. -- JP

Cable TV runs music documentary

JAKARTA: A documentary film series on music and the country's music figures from the 1970s until now will be aired by cable TV Astro Awani channel to celebrate National Awakening Day.

The 10-episode series was made by three young female directors under the supervision of noted director Garin Nugroho.

Garin said the special program was prepared to mark the 100th anniversary of National Awakening Day, which falls on May 20.

One film will be screened per night (Monday-Friday at 7 p.m.), starting May 12 to May 16 and then continuing from May 19 to May 23.

Each episode will have its own theme; some themes include song as a means to unite the nation, song as a means to foster community development and song as a political propaganda tool.

Hits such as "Bang Bang Tut" by Slank, and "Bongkar" (Demolition) and "Bento" by Iwan Fals, were selected for the film's soundtrack. -- JP

How to Close-ups

The other day I was asked to take some pictures of snails which got me thinking about the perils of close-up photography in general.

The first problem we need to look at is, how close the lens will focus. Lenses have a minimum focus distance which varies considerably from lens to lens, some longer zoom lenses have a 'macro' setting and will focus quite close but most lenses will not focus close enough to take the picture on the right.

Extension Tubes

If the lens you are using will not focus close enough there are a couple of ways to make it do so. If the lens is detachable from the camera, you can use 'extension tubes'. These usually come in a set of three which can be used separately or together. They fit between the lens and the camera body and, as the name suggests, there is no glass in them, they merely serve to move the lens further away from the film plane (or CCD on a digital camera). The lens will now focus on closer objects than it would before but will no longer focus on infinity.

Extension tubes are a good solution as you are still using the quality lens that you paid so much money for and so the picture quality will be the same as for any other shot. The downside (there's always a downside, you never get anything for nothing) is that you need more light (the inverse square law works just as well behind the lens as it does in front), either a longer shutter time or a wider aperture. Your meter will automatically compensate for this but it can lead to severe depth of field problems which we will discuss in a couple of paragraphs.

Close-up Lenses

Close-up lenses are a bit like reading glasses, they are attached to the front of the lens and their strength is measured in diopters. So a +2 diopter lens will focus closer than a +1 etc. Using close-up lenses solves the problem of needing extra light but now you have something on the front of your lens. The front element of your lens and the beautiful multi coating on it, that you paid a fortune for and have lovingly looked after, are not being used. The quality of your photo is now, to some extent at least, in the hands of your close-up lens. So make sure you buy a decent make, they are not expensive so there is no need to buy the cheapest.

Depth of Field

Whichever method you choose to get your close-up, the mere act of focusing on close objects narrows the depth of field down to problematic levels (for an explanation of depth of field click here). Any kind of wide aperture setting becomes out of the question if you hope to get the whole object in focus. If your subject is static and you have a tripod you have the option of shooting at a slow shutter speed and therefore a small aperture, but if not, you need a lot of light. Either sunlight or flashlight will do (I used a small studio flash for the snails), but you must get the aperture ring closed down to f22 or whatever your smallest aperture setting is. Even then you will find that sometimes this is not enough and part of your subject is still out of focus. Well, if that's the case, then it's time to make a decision about which parts of the subject most need to be in focus.

All other things being equal, I would almost always choose to have the parts nearest to the camera in focus and let the background and parts furthest from the camera go out of focus. This to me looks less like a mistake than a picture where the foreground is out of focus. There are always exceptions and one I can think of is an extreme close-up of a face, if I had to choose between the eye(s) being in focus or the nose, I would always choose the eyes because they are a more important part of the face.

There are times of course when a shallow depth of field can be very effective. I'm quite fond of this flower shot because the stamens really stand out against the out of focus petal. I also like the area of sharp focus on the right. It is usually considered to be a bad thing to have two focal points in a picture but in this instance I think it works quite well. To me, the main centre of interest is the right hand side with the lovely crisp water droplets.

This was a very dull day just after the rain, I had no tripod and so could only manage 1/60th at f8. I must admit that if I could, I would have tried to render the whole flower in focus but I like this the way it is.

It is also a good illustration of photography in muted lighting conditions. I am usually an advocate of strong sunlight but here it would have caused problems with too much contrast, making these beautiful colours difficult to render.

Dengan wajah berbinar, Da’i kondang bernama asli Abdullah Gymnastiar mengungkapkan rasa takjubnya ketika menyertai sang istri melahirkan putra ke-8 nya. Sayang, kebahagiaan itu seakan tidak ikut dirasakan oleh istri pertama da’i kondang tersebut. Pasalnya, hingga saat ini tak sekalipun nampak Teh Nini datang menjenguk rivalnya itu. Benarkah Teh Nini tak rela ada anak lain yang mendapat kasih sayang dari sang kepala keluarga?

Pasangan Abdullah Gymnastiar dengan Nini Mutmainah pernah menjadi sorotan sebagai keluarga harmonis saat kemunculan pertama kali di layar kaca. Bagaimana tidak, sebagai istri yang shalehah, Teh Nini berusaha selalu menyempatkan diri menemani acara-acara keagamaan yang dibimbing sang suami. Dan dengan tabah membesarkan 7 orang anak hasil perkawinannya dengan sang da’i. Benar-benar menjadi keluarga besar yang bahagia bagi masyarakat umum.

Namun, keputusan kontroversi lelaki yang lahir tahun 1962 itu untuk berpoligami membuat banyak khalayak mengelus dada. Dan seakan tak mau tahu komentar banyak pihak, Aa’ Gym menikahi Elvarini, karyawannya. Dengan dalih ingin menafkahi janda beranak 3 ini, Aa’ Gym akhirnya mendua dari Teh Nini. Apapun masa lalu, yang pasti Teh Nini mengaku telah ikhlas menerima kehadiran madunya untuk ikut mendampingi kegiatan suami mereka bersama-sama.

Dan, hari Rabu 29 Oktober 2008 pukul 07.30 WIB lahirlah putra kandung ke-8 Aa’ Gym yang diberi nama Muhammad Gaysandi. Rumah sakit Women & Children didaerah Cipete Jakarta Selatan yang dipercayai menangani proses persalinan wanita berusia 39 tahun itu mengungkapkan bahwa persalinan dilakukan secara caesar dikarenakan posisi bayi laki-laki ini terlilit tali pusar meskipun demikian operasi berjalan lancar.

Diberitakan lebih lanjut, istri kedua Aa’ Gym yang masih perlu mendapat perawatan akan berada hingga 1 Nopember 2008 di kamar no. 307 lantai 3. Namun hingga saat ini, Teh Nini yang kedatangannya paling ditunggu para pencari berita tak kunjung tiba. Kabar yang santer beredar, istri tua itu tak rela ada anak lain dikeluarga besar mereka. Namun, berita tersebut dibantah sang da’i. Menurut pria berkacamata ini, justru Teh Nini dan ke-7 putranya yang paling bersemangat dengan kehadiran Gaysan. Hanya saja, mereka akan menunggu kepulangan Teh Rini ke kediamannya di Depok dulu baru menjenguk. Ditambahkan, membawa 7 orang anak ke Rumah Sakit takutnya malah mengganggu pasien lainnya.

Ya, sudahlah, yang penting akur ya, Aa’. Berarti total anak di keluarga besar Abdullah Gymnastiar ada 11 orang dong, bisa nih jadi kesebelasan sepak bola. Hehehe… Sekali lagi, Selamat atas kelahiran putra ke-11 Aa’ Gym.

Yuli Rachmawati yang lebih dikenal sebagai Julia Perez (lahir di Jakarta, 15 Juli 1980; umur 28 tahun) adalah model, presenter, pemain sinetron, dan penyanyi dangdut Indonesia. Karir Jupe, panggilan akrabnya, dimulai di Prancis. Perkenalannya dengan model pria Damien Perez (Yusuf Perez) yang kemudian menjadi suaminya, membuka kesempatan awal dirinya tampil sebagai model majalah FHM dan Maxim di Perancis. Sebelumnya Jupe mendapat kesempatan melanjutkan pendidikan di Belanda lewat training sebagai sekretaris di sebuah parusahaan swasta. Berkat penampilannya dalam FHM dan Maxim, Jupe mendapat nominasi 100 wanita terseksi versi majalah FHM dan Maxim.

Berfoto seksi merupakan hal bisa bagi Jupe. Terbukti dengan penampilan seksinya di majalah pria dewasa terbitan luar negeri. Namun saat koleksi foto-foto syur miliknya muncul di koran terbitan ibukota, Jupe pun gerah. Wanita keturunan Sunda-Betawi ini melaporkan melaporkan hal tersebut ke Yanmas Polda Metro Jaya pada tanggal 6 Maret 2007. Namun karena tak mau kasusnya berlarut-larut, Jupe pun mencabut laporannya pada tanggal 21 Maret 2007. Jupe mengatakan hal ini dilakukannya setelah ketiga fotografer tersebut telah meminta maaf pada dirinya yang disertai pertemuan yang berlangsung secara kooperatif dan kondusif. Baginya permasalahan ini sudah dianggap selesai walau terasa berat karena ia adalah korban.

Nama Jupe di Indonesia dikenal lewat sinetron Cinta Lokasi, Komedi Nakal, Penjaga Pantai, Lepas Malam, Maafkan Aku, Rahasia Ilahi, Hidayah, Doa, Mimpi Manis, dan Perempuan Teraniaya. Jupe juga telah bermain dalam beberapa film layar lebar, antara lain Susahnya Jadi Perawan, Shamar, dan Beranak Dalam Kubur

Selain dunia peran, Jupe juga merambah dunia tarik suara. Bulan April 2008, Jupe mengeluarkan album perdananya yang berjudul Kamasutra yang bergenre dangdut. Dalam album tersebut Jupe juga menyertakan kondom yang diselipkan dalam cover albumnya. Meski Jupe menyatakan tindakan tersebut adalah salah satu misinya untukmemberantas HIV/AIDS dan mendukung program KB, namun banyak pihak yang menilai tindakannya tersebut adalah bentuk dukungan terhadap seks bebas. Bahkan Menteri Pemberdayaan Perempuan, Meuthia Hatta pun angkat bicara dan menyatakan bahwa tindakan tersebut bisa diinterpretasikan dukungan terhadap seks bebas, apalagi lirik lagu dalam album Kamasutra memperkuat dugaan tersebut. Hanya dalam minggu pertama perilisannya, album Jupe telah dicekal di NTB dan Balikpapan. Sebelum merilis album, Jupe telah menekuni dunia dangdut. Bahkan Jupe membekali diri dengan les vokal dan mempunyai goyang andalan yang diberi nama goyang blender. Jupe juga berhasil menjadi juara pertama kompetisi musik "Selebriti Mendadak Dangdut" yang diadakan di ANTV.

Kontroversi mengenai albumnya bukan yang pertama, jauh sebelum itu Jupe telah akrab dengan kontroversi. Jupe yang kerap berpakaian dan berpose seksi bahkan tak risih dengan julukan bomseks yang dilekatkan padanya.Jupe juga menanggapi enteng kabar kabar mengenai operasi pembesaran payudara yang dilakukannya.

Meski Jupe identik dengan hal berbau seksi, hal itu tak menghalangi Percasi, organisasi catur tertinggi di Indonensia, mengangkat Jupe menjadi ikonnya. Hal ini ditandai dengan diluncurkannya turnamen "Julia Perez Rapid Chess Open Tournament" di gedung Piramyd BPG, Senayan Jakarta pada tanggal 5 Oktober 2006.

Jupe menikah dengan Damien Perez, seorang warga negara Perancis, di Perancis tanggal 7 Oktober 2002. Meski telah menikah lama, keduanya belum dikaruniai anak. Jupe pernah keguguran di tahun 2007. Pada beberapa kesempatan, Jupe menyatakan dirinya menunda momongan karena ingin konsentrasi pada karirnya.
